Week 30: Bridging the Classroom-Home Gap

Week 30: Bridging the Classroom-Home Gap

The Big Goal: Strengthen pupil outcomes by mastering the art of constructive parent-teacher communication and consistent behaviour management.

The Pulse: Managing Behaviour (CCF Focus)

This week, we turn our attention to CCF TS7, focusing on the powerful impact of building trust and consistency beyond the classroom walls.

  • The Why: Effective behaviour management is rarely a solo act. By liaising with parents and carers, you gain essential context that transforms how you support pupils to meet high expectations.

  • The Weekly Target: Refine your ability to communicate effectively with home, ensuring that your interactions—whether addressing concerns or celebrating successes—positively influence pupil progress and attitude.

  • Mentor Action (Deliberate Practice): Select a shared pupil group and identify two individuals who would benefit from targeted intervention. Model for your trainee how to initiate contact home to build a relationship, then support them as they lead the contact for the second pupil.

The 3-Minute Takeaway:

Communication with parents is often a source of anxiety for early-career teachers. This episode breaks down the "Positive-First" approach, demonstrating how establishing rapport through praise makes those difficult conversations about behaviour far more effective and less confrontational.

🎓 Training & Development

This week features Subject Specific Training on Wednesday, 6th May.

Focused Observation: Prioritise observing a colleague who manages a pupil with a "tailored approach" or an Individual Behaviour Plan. Take note of how their communication with home aligns with the school’s broader behaviour policy.

The Expert Corner: Pro-Tips for Home-School Links

Managing behaviour is about consistency and clarity. Here are two actionable steps to take this week:

  1. The "Good News" Ratio: Before you need to call home regarding a negative behaviour, ensure you have made at least one "positive" contact for that pupil. It changes the dynamic of your future relationship with both the pupil and the parent.

  2. Monitor the Impact: Don’t treat a phone call as a "done deal." Closely observe the pupil in the subsequent two lessons. Did the contact impact their engagement? Feedback to home on the progress—positive reinforcement closes the loop.

It’s a shorter week with the Bank Holiday, so please encourage your trainees to use this time for both focused planning and genuine rest. These final weeks are intense, but the work you are doing now—embedding these professional communication habits—will serve them for the rest of their careers.

Warm regards,
