Week 28: Mastering Vocabulary & Literacy
The Big Goal: Refine subject-specific pedagogy by bridging the gap between new vocabulary acquisition and a genuine culture of reading.
The Pulse: CCF Focus
This week, we are diving deep into Standard 3: Subject and Curriculum. As trainees move into the final stages of their journey, the focus shifts from "delivering content" to "unlocking language."
-
The Why: Vocabulary is the gatekeeper of understanding. Without explicit instruction in high-utility and subject-specific language, pupils can’t access the higher-level concepts we want them to master.
-
Weekly Target: Deliver explicit teaching of new vocabulary (3p) and integrate strategies to promote reading for pleasure within your subject or tutor time (3r).
-
Mentor Action (Deliberate Practice): Together, audit the vocabulary in an upcoming lesson sequence. Mentor: Model the explicit instruction of a complex term. Trainee: Practice that same modeling with a secondary term identified in the audit.

3-Minute Takeaway: The "Tier 2" Strategy
In this episode, we discuss why focusing on "Tier 2" words (high-frequency academic words like evaluate or contrast) often yields higher impact than just focusing on technical "Tier 3" labels. Learn how to pre-teach these to prevent cognitive overload during main tasks.
Roadmap & Logistics: Phase 4 Mastery
We are firmly in Phase 4, where trainees are honing their independence and managing a near-full timetable.

Training & Development
This week features Subject Specific Training on Wednesday. It’s an "In-School Landing" period, meaning the focus should be on applying central theory directly to the classroom context.
-
Trainee Task: Review and refresh your Audit Log Booklet. Identify any remaining gaps in your subject knowledge or pedagogical application to discuss in your next mentor meeting.
-
Assignment Check-in: How is UA2 progressing? Use your mentor meeting to provide a summary update on your data collection or literature review.
Expert Corner:
-
Pro-Tip 1: Don’t use popcorn reading - this has been shown to be ineffective - https://readingrev.com/blog/
stop-popcorn-reading-do-this- instead -
Pro-Tip 2: Don't just define a word; "map" it. Show its root, its synonyms, and how it behaves in a sentence.
-
Actionable Observation: Trainees should observe an experienced colleague specifically during the first 10 minutes of a lesson to see how they introduce new vocabulary (3p).
Warm regards,
Edwina and the GUTP Team
